Boons Explained: Why Every Kingsguard TD Run Is Different

Boons are the roguelite heart of Kingsguard TD. Learn how the boon meter works, drafting heroes versus boons, rerolls, super boons and five example builds.

Kingsguard TD: Heroes & Magic is a roguelite tower defense game, and boons are the reason no two runs feel the same. Here is how they work.

What are boons?

Boons are upgrades you draft during a battle. They do not just add damage – they change how a hero attacks. A Bowmaster boon can split arrows into homing splinters; a Pyromancer boon can leave burning ground behind every fireball. Boons last for the run, so every new battle is a chance to try a different build.

How do you earn boons?

Defeated enemies drop elixir, which fills your boon meter. When the meter is full, the battle pauses and you choose one of three options. Until your five hero slots are filled, a draft can also offer new heroes – so drafting is about building your team as much as upgrading it.

Rerolls and prerequisites

Not happy with the three cards on offer? Use a reroll to draw again. Some boons build on others – Splinters and Seeking Arrows improve the mini arrows created by Ricochet Tips, and boons tied to a hero only appear once that hero is on the wall.

Super boons

Heroes also have super boons – transformative upgrades such as the Cleric’s Twin Beam (a second beam) or the Chakram’s Huge Chakram (a bigger, faster blade).

Even the wall cannon evolves

The wall cannon fires on its own – touch the battlefield to aim it – and has its own boons, such as Heavy Shells, Rapid Loader, Piercing Shells and Ricochet.

Five example builds

The Burning Wall (Pyromancer)

Scorching Ground + Wildfire + Chain Ignition + Spreading Flames. Fireballs leave burning ground, burns spread when enemies die, and burning enemies explode. Ideal against swarms.

Storm of Splinters (Bowmaster)

Ricochet Tips + Seeking Arrows + Explosive Shots + Eagle Eye. Every arrow becomes a cluster of homing, bouncing, exploding mini arrows that mark targets for the whole team.

Eye of the Tempest (Blademaster)

Blade Vacuum + Tempest Rhythm + Returning Storm. Tornadoes pull enemies in, every fourth one doubles in size, and each storm sweeps the lane twice.

Holy Judgement (Cleric)

Judgement + Penance + Reflection. A ricocheting beam that slows enemies and makes them take extra damage from every hero.

Endless Edge (Chakram)

Momentum + Split End + Caltrops. A chakram that hits harder with every bounce, splits in two and leaves traps behind.

Why it matters

Because boons reset each run, Kingsguard TD rewards adapting to what the draft gives you – and permanent progression like runes, sigils and artifacts makes each new run start a little stronger.
